Do babies have to be taught fear, or can they be afraid of anything?
I have a slight fear of the dark, I’m 13. I can’t stand not being able to know what’s there, and I’ll start seeing things if my glasses aren’t on. Well, we were babysitting this 3-year-old and she’s getting to be bossy, so I ended up doing what she asked me to.
Which is why I stood on a bathroom scale whilst the door was shut and locked and Donna (the toddler) stood on a stool, flicking the lights on and off and on and off. She wasn’t scared at all, meanwhile I’m trying not to freak out.
Kinda embarrassing, a teenager being afraid (slightly, I said!) of the dark and a toddler standing beside them going, “The light is on. The light is off,” over and over again. She made me un-afraid of the dark. XD
Back to the original question: Do babies have to be taught fear? Like, “That’s scary, so-and-so will happen!” or can it come naturally?
It comes naturally. Everyone has a fear of something.
Some fears are brought on by a certain event (scary stories about the ‘boogie man’ coming out after dark’ could lead to fears of the dark) and other fears are just formed.
I am petrified of spiders! Not just a little, but a LOT. I will literally shake when I see one. It’s embarrassing because I am a MOTHER .. lol. That’s worse than being a 13 year old scared of the dark. I am sure my 2 yr. old son would happily play with a spider, while I on the other hands would literally pee my pants if one was touching me!
