Bath Beach Play

are ear plugs absolutely necessary when bathing or splashing in a kiddie pool for a child with ear tubes?

my son just got tubes in his ears … just in time for the warm weather and pool season – boo! he’s 17 months old and absolutely freaks out when we put his ear plugs in for bath time. we’re going to the beach for vacation in a couple of months and also have been invited to friend’s houses to play in their little kiddie pools. i don’t want to traumatize the poor boy with ear plugs, but don’t want to deprive him of summer fun either. my friend has a son with ear tubes about the same age and his doctor said he doesn’t need to use ear plugs, even at bath time, however my son’s doctor said they’re a must. any advice?

I would agree with an earlier post and say that if there is a chance that his whole head will go under water or a significant amount of water will get in his ears then he must wear the ear plugs. I don’t know how long your son has had the tubes, but my son hated the ear plugs for the first week or two and now he doesn’t mind. I went on-line to the Ear Plug Store and found Putty Buddies. They are reusable and come in a set of five different colors each in their own tubs which have animal pictures on the label. I made it into a game with my son and let him choose which color he wanted to wear each night (I put them in for bath time because my son is 2 and exploring laying back in the tub). He started off picking one color and now he likes to mix and match each night and he tells me which color to put in which ear. I would persevere with them, I was worried in the beginning that we would have a struggle every time, but it has become part of our night time routine and now he doesn’t care. You may not think that he needs them for his bath but it doesn’ hurt to put them in and it does help to get him used to having them in and then it doesn’t become a battle on special days at the beach or the pool
