'Fat thinner "refers to the principle of the application of" paint-fat oil, which has a higher proportion of oil pigment, more "Oil painting of scarcity, which has a lower oil to pigment ratio to ensure a stable paint film. Idea is to prevent the top layers of paint Oil dries faster than the lower layers, which can lead to cracking oil paint.

Oil painting towards the outside of the tube is considered "fat." Add more oil, such as linseed oil, will be even "bigger", which increases the drying time. Even when is dry to the touch, yet can be dried under the surface.

"Lean" painting, by contrast, oil paint mixed with turpentine or otherwise-dry quickly. 'Lean' oil paint paint dry faster than oil "fat."

The bottom line, to avoid cracks is that each coat of oil should be "bigger" than later. This is because if "lean oil painting is painted in" fat oil painting, the thin layer may be subjected to breakdown in the "big dry layer and contracts below. In addition, the lower layers tend to absorb oil layers above them, especially when "over lean fat is not followed.

Another thing to consider is the quality of oil paintings used. oil paintings are often cheaper added drying agents, which makes more uniform drying time.

On the contrary, the quality of Oil paintings are usually composed of oil and pigments, resulting in different drying times. For example, snowflakes Prussian blue, titanium white, white, and all have low oil and dry faster. However, cadmium yellow and cadmium red, which have an average oil content, usually about five days dry.

Some manufacturers of oil paint, you may ignore the "fat over lean" principle of using synthetic, alkyd based media as Galkyd and Liquin. However, if these products provide consistent drying times, increase flexibility of the paint film, and promote the adhesion between layers of paint, their long-term stability is not known at this time.
